Palheiro Golf Club

Madeira Island

Palheiro Golf is situated about 10 km east of Funchal with magnificent views overlooking the town and bay. The 18-hole par 72 course was designed by Cabell Robinson in 1993 and is skillfully set in the estate and parkland of the Quinta do Palheiro. Remarkable for its Bermuda fairways, fast greens and the presence of many spectacular mature trees, the course is a worthy challenge for all handicap levels. Very few locations on this volcanic Atlantic island offer any opportunity for a golf course. At Quinta do Palheiro, golf architect Cabell Robinson combines Madeiran hills, ridges and deep valleys with golfable terrain to produce a dramatically interesting course, not too long at 6086m and playable with great enjoyment by the visiting and casual golfer. Five par 3s increase the number of 'fun' holes over the customary four. There are 5 par 5s, the longest measuring 529 metres. Fairway contouring and bunker positions will demand accurate tee shot placement to set up the best approach to the contoured greens. Players will benefit from the numerous tees on each hole, and generous fairway widths. For the best combination of holes, Palheiro is designed as a continuous 18, like St Andrew's, Sotogrande and other famous courses. Palheiro nicely treads the fine line between a challenging medium length course enjoyable for resort golfers and a stern test of golfing skill and accuracy for expert players.. The stylish Clubhouse is in the traditional Madeiran style using local stone, red tiling and marble quarried from the Portuguese mainland. It is open throughout the year, providing a well-equipped Pro-Shop, buggy hire and an informal grill bar. The Clubhouse lies below the eighteenth green, sharing with it spectacular views over Funchal Bay. As well as a practice putting green, there is a covered training and practice area and driving nets.
