Marco Simone Golf
Club
Guidonia, (Roma), Italy
Established in 1989 by the
fashion designer Laura Biagiotti, Marco Simone Golf Club was created to
be a golfing centre with 36 holes, suitable not only for relaxed play
but also for international championships. The fairways and greens fit
seamlessly with the natural framework of the countryside. Marco Simone's
most famous hole is the 146 mts long 2nd par 3 hole. Sloping bunkers protect
the green and on its left flank, the waters of a pond perfectly mirror
the imposing tower of the castle nearby It could be said that the tower
comes in to play again on the 4th par 4 hole, 329 mts in length. The rising
fairway in front of the tee position must be well negotiated, then once
on the summit of the hilly fairway, the tower miraculously comes in to
view behind the green, almost like a guiding light for a good approach
shot, helping the player avoid a series of difficult sloping bunkers which
protect the elevated green. A surprising hole is the 9th, par 4, 356 mts
in length, which from the tee position could seem like an easy proposition.
But a bad drive creates a very problematic second shot to the green. The
surprise comes in the form of the dogleg left, giving a view to an apparently
inaccessible green far below, with rough and a transverse ditch in between.
To the right of the green, bunkers, an extremely tricky water hazard,
and the comforting sight of the clubhouse in the background. It is a beautiful
hole to be enjoyed to the hilt, even if the outcome is not particularly
brilliant. The 18 hole executive course is obviously less demanding than
the championship course but it also constitutes an excellent test of any
golfers ability. The first 9 holes are laid out on undulating land while
the 2nd 9 are panoramically situated on higher hilly ground.
