Locale: Santo da Serra is a lovely small village situated on a thickly wooded plateau, known for its eucalyptus/pine scented clear and crisp air. Adjacent to the village square is a large government run park, beautifully landscaped, with a large variety of plants, shrubs and trees that are typical of this area. Here you will also find a tennis court, and a variety of animals and birds in a reserved area. The whole area is ideal for walks, be it along the many levadas that intersperse the countryside or along the many paths used over the history of the island for communication between villages. The local activity is mainly agriculture and at weekends this fresh produce is sold by the roadsides and through the stalls of the local market that springs up every weekend. Pão do Santo (Santo’s country bread) is also famous and bought in large quantities by visitors. Its inhabitants are, in the main, simple people, and like all Madeirans, friendly and welcoming, and anyone visiting Santo da Serra will certainly come into contact with them and their traditional way of life.
