Located only 35 minutes north of Lisbon along the A1 motorway, near Rio Maior, Golden Eagle Golf Resort is one of the most beautiful and challenging golf courses in Portugal. The course was designed by the renowned architect Rocky Roquemore, and it is a modern course focusing on positioning and percentage in golf. Bordered throughout with a natural landscape, the course runs for over 6600 metres, along which players must contend with 8 water hazards and numberous bunkers protecting both landing areas and greens. The course has been lengthened through newly constructed professional tees, qualifying it to host European tour events, but this course remains fun and challenging for all levels of players.
Hole 7: Par 4 just short of 400 metres (stroke index 1). This hole is a slight dogleg right to left which requires a straight drive down the centre of the fairway. Stray too far and you will have to play for the green from the bunker positioned on the dogleg. Out of bounds all along the right side with dense bushes and large pine trees along the left demands accuracy off the tee. Located in the middle of the fairway and 110 metres from the green entrance are several pine trees which will require a push shot through the centre or an 8 or 9 iron over the top. A 2-tiered, although receptive, green will still leave you facing a bogey at best.
Hole 8: This 560 metres Par 5 stroke index 7 monster is the longest hole on the course and possibly also the longest golf hole in Portugal. Out of bounds down the entire right side of the fairway with bunkers positioned both right and left to collect any pushed or sliced tee shots. Water hazard easily within reach with second shot and with an enormous green protected by bunkers on every corner will leave you well pleased to play the hole in par.
Hole 11: 420 metres, par 4, stroke index 2. Tee shot to be hit to the left of centre of the fairway thus avoiding a large water hazard which bites into the right hand side of the landing area. A good mid-iron across the water into a well-protected slightly-elevated green may well be rewarded with two putts for par.
