The Ailsa courses were rescued from near extinction and redesigned by
golf architect Mackenzie Ross in the 1950s. Since then the hotel has hosted
many amateur and professional championships. It has been the Open Championship
venue and the scene of the famous 'duel in the sun' between Jack Nicklaus
and Tom Watson in 1977, also Greg Normans final 63 (1986), and the
place Nick Price eagled the 17th on his way to win the Open in 1994. A
classic links course built among the high dune ridges and gorse.Beautiful
views across to sea to Ailsa Craig, Robert the Bruces Castle, the
Isle of Arran and the Mull of Kintyre. One of the best courses in the
world and always in top condition. Caddies available.
Open to visitors anytime although tee times may only be reserved 2 weeks
in advance unless you are a guest of the Westin
Turnberry Golf Resort.
